We signed up at (Maurice) church to pray for you. We were able to go on this mission trip in 2010 and it was such a blessing in our lives. We pray that it will bless you just as much. Enjoy all the people of Guatemala–it was amazing to me how much you could communicate with smiling!
Also, we pray that your team will bond and enjoy God’s Spirit in a very visible way. We were so blessed getting to know people from Michigan while we were there and consider them dear friends even after returning home. God’s blessing and power to you–we hope to hear from you after you return home.

Well, we are here! The flights yesterday went great and it was super fun experiencing an international flight (and a night flight) on my first plane rides ever! We arrived at the base late last night and were quickly in bed for some rest and quickly right back up again. We left this morning around 7 and started our first day of building. After traveling through crazy Guatemala traffic and bumpy roads and great mountaneous views…and volcanos…(so cool!) we made it to our village that we would be building at. We split into four different groups and went to the spots that we would be building the four different houses. My group wasn’t able to meet the family that we are building for, so we prayed for them and over the spot we would be building and got busy! At first not many kiddos were around but as time progressed more and more showed up and of course, wanted candy! After we disappointed them today with having no candy, they decided to stick around and help us anyway. I was very surprised by their willingness to help and be around us! They are the cutest kids I have ever seen and are so full of life and just want so much love! Most of the people in the village speak Spanish only..especially the children…so it was definitely interseting to see how much Spanish I could actually remeber from class…which was not very much. One boy that followed me around handing me screws did tell me that my spanish was very bad, but he didn’t seem to mind! They were so accepting of us and at times they would just run up to you and want you to pick them up…melted my heart! We then stopped for lunch and had rice, beans, and tortilla (which was super good) and then continued to work through the afternoon. After most of the work was done we headed back to the base for lasagna and a warm shower.

It has been a great day so far and I am so excited to see what God is going to be doing in everyone’s lives this week. I can’t even begin to imagine what this week will bring after all of the blessings today, itself has brought!
Thank you all for your thoughts, kind words, and prayers! They are definitely working! I am so thankful for each of you and can’t wait to share more stories with you!
    Have a great night!

  10. Shaelee you are such an inspiration! I love watching you and your love for God! Your faith makes me look at mine and see what I can be doing more of and trust God more. Thank you for being such a great mentor to the kiddos they love you to pieces!!!
I pray that your cup is overflowing with beautiful experiences! Have fun and we are praying for you.

Hey Shaelee! Glad to hear you made it safely and had a good first day of work! I’m sure you will have a great week, learn a lot, make meaningful relationships and touch the lives of those around you! Who would’ve thought that our lives/paths would have intersected like this after leaving Wisconsin?! Look forward to reading about your week!

  12. Rhea says:

I am so glad to hear about your day! What a great experience you are having! The guys went to SDSU boys game tonight and they won in OT by 2. The girls also won in OT! So Brett is very happy! We miss you but are happy you are having a good time thus far. Love you!!!!!

  13. Donna says:

Keep us updated! Loved your post… keep them coming. I’m glad you had a safe (and uneventful) trip! God is working in you and through you…. you will see some amazing things this week and touch many lives as well (in ways you won’t even know). Take it all in and enjoy every minute!

Thanks everyone for your comments! It is so good to hear from all of you! Day 2 was another amazing day. We woke up at 5:30 and were leaving for the villages again at 6:30. It was such a beautiful day. It seems like the more and more we go back and forth on the same road the more God reveals to me, whether it is through the beautiful scenery or the talks we have in the vans on the way down to the village. Today we sanded the mud on the walls, put up stucco, and added patios to all of the houses. While doing the stucco (a pink color we put on the outside of the house…basically mud and water) we designated half of us to put stucco on the walls and the other half to run it to those who needed it. The one thing that surprised me was the amount of willingness the kids had to help. They were constantly running back and forth bringing stucco and having a blast. After we were done some of the kids and their families that were around had a stucco fight, putting some on each other, and they were so full of joy! So much laughter came through the village today and it blessed me so much! Today there were a lot more kiddos around and now that we had been there a day the faces looked more familiar today and most of us have even developed a relationship with a buddy or two 🙂 My favorite part of today- when two little girls, about 5, sung for me. We were finishing up lunch when myself and another team member were surrounded by about 4 or 5 girls. The two girls that sang to me were right on my lap and sitting by my feet when they asked if I sang..I sheepishly responded no, but when I asked them they exuberantly answered yes and they started singing! It was so beautiful…I have idea what they were singing about but I could not have been more blessed. It’s amazing the people that God places in your path at a certain time and for a certain reason, and these girls were definitely a blessing to me!
Our food today was the best food I have ever had! Seriously! We had chicken salad or guacamole on tostadas with rice. I could seriously live on that food forever! It was SO good! Tonight we were served the best potato soup ever, and coming from a not-so much soup lover, it was the best! I even had 2nds! haha 🙂
Other fun fact for the day–since we are surrounded by volcanos– we got to see them poof out smoke! Definitely sweet! haha 🙂

I can’t believe that today is already Wednesday and that we will be leaving once again before we know it. Another team member and I voted that we just stay here, we all love it so much. It has really opened my eyes to how awesome God is and how much power he has and I am constantly reminded how Jesus would have served these people, just by hanging out and loving on them. Even though I will probably not see many or most of these people and children again I could not share enough about how much they have impacted me and blessed me and it’s only the 2nd day.
    God is so good!

Again, thank you so much, all of you, for your notes and thoughts and prayers! We can definitely feel your prayers working-definitely.

Well, I hope you all have a good night! I will hopefully be able to share again tomorrow 🙂
    Much love– 🙂

  15. Rhea says:

Well, Scrub…guess what you are getting to eat when you get home! LOL!!!! I am so happy that you are enjoying your trip so much! For that I am soooo very thankful! We had kind of an uneventful day; but a good one nonetheless. Well, get a good nights sleep! Love you loads!

  16. LeRoy says:

I am glad you are enjoying yourself and having an impact on the children around you. By the way, what do you mean you can’t sing? I have heard you and you do well. I am also pleased to see you enjoying the food. As for staying, not sure about that yet. 🙂 I am praying for you and the team as you touch lives with God’s love and grace. Prayed today for the people that will be getting their homes. Prayed that they would be touched by God and see His love for them and His desire to be in relationship with them. Take care and love you TONS!!. (I had to at least to one up on mom.)

  17. Karlene says:

Hey Shaelee, I am so glad you are feeling God’s love in so many wonderful ways. When our son was on a mission trip to Chiapas, Mexico, he expressed how happy the people were there and they had so little. He knew their happiness came from having Jesus in their hearts. He also said the little children loved to sing and play. That trip changed his life in such a good way. My prayers continue to be with you and your group and that you will be filled with the Holy Spirit. I am so thankful for your willingness to serve God.

  18. Reba Jongeling says:

Hey love – keep rockin’ that great attitude and keep on blessing those children’s lives. This is something that they (or you) will ever forget. Praying and thinking about you daily. I’m honored to be your best friend and be able to watch the way God is challenging you and impacting your life. I hope all is still well and today was just as great as the others 🙂 love you!

  19. Shaelee Boender says:

Well only time to leave a quick note but just wanted to share a little about how amazing today was. Today we dedicated the houses that we built and after we dedicated them they were given the opportunity to give their lives to Christ or re-dedicate. During this time the team was encouraged to lay hands around the house and pray…it was such a powerful thing. Challenging to be praying for so long, most definitely, but so powerful and amazing to watch. The guy we built a house for gave his life to Christ a week ago (praise God!) but it was still so amazing to see the happiness on his face. We had to leave the kiddos today and I balled all the way out of the village. Amazing how much of an impact these children can have on you in three days.
You all will have to ask me more about today when I get home as we are getting ready for devotions, but I can tell you that your prayers are definitely working and it is so beautiful and amazing down here!

Thanks again for all of the messages, I know I keep saying it but it is truly a blessing. Really. Sleep has not been the best for me the past few nights and how I get through the day is truly only strength from God. Thank you so much, your encouragement and prayers definitely help. A ton.
Well! Sorry I didn’t have time to share tonight..Not sure how much time we will have to blog the next couple of days as we will be doing medical clinics and won’t be back to the base until about midnight or so. If I get the chance I will definitely be giving an update.
In the meantime continue to keep us in your prayers! The next few days are going to be a new experience, but again I cannot wait to see what God has done, and reflect over all that God has done over the past few days.
    Much love–!

  20. Rhea says:

Glad you had another amazing day! God is so good, isn’t He? I am so glad you went on this trip…you really followed God’s lead. Sounds like you are having the most incredible experience of your life! Anxious to hear about it all! Love you! And have fun tomorrow!

  21. Aunt Kathleen Wieringa says:

Shaelee, it is interesting to read your blogs. I know the feeling of limited Spanish, as well. Have to ask me about our trip to TX to work on a house down there that we did several weeks ago. Isn’t it something when you are hungry, you can eat anything?! We are praying for you and your team during this time.

  22. Rhea says:

Understand that you guys are extremely tired and drained…but doing good! Hope that your day yesterday went well. It’s your dad’s b-day today. Some people from church took him out for breakfast this morning at 6am! He kind of has a busy day…has a commital for a baby this afternoon. (Will explain that when you get home.) I took him out for a b-day supper last night. Was going to see Act of Valor – but decided it was probably a movie he and Brett should see – too gory for me! LOL! Well, just know we are praying for you everyday and are very proud of you! Trust you have another great day! Love you and miss you!

    Good morning!
I can’t believe that today is Saturday already. Makes my heart ache a little knowing that we will be on a plane again and heading back to the states.
Yesterday we got to sleep in! It felt amazing..sleeping in for another hour does wonders! We seperated into two different teams in the morning and one team divided meds and another team made bags of beans and rice. I was on the beans and rice crew and it was fun! We had lots of good conversation and lots of good laughs. We then had our daily group devos and I will tell you, Dan is one heck of a devo leader. He challenges you in a way that you have never been challeneged before. We then had a quick lunch and we were on the road once again to the village we would be working in the for the day. Once we got there we set up the medical clinic and again we split up into teams and half of us worked in the medical clinic and the other half played with the kiddos. I was in the medical clinic and I really enjoyed it! We basically are in charge of about 4 tubs and we just go down the line and fill the bags of medicine that we need. Again we had lots of good conversation as a team and it just amazes me how God blesses us more and more. I’m not sure how many families we helped but I know that we did help about ten extra families. Once the clinic was close to being done we showed the Jesus film on a white sheet on the wall..after our group got up and sang some songs for them and then some shared their testimonies. It was awesome! Then Hermano Jesus a pastor that has been going around with us gave the best sermon ever…and then the crowd was given the opportunity to give their lives to Christ in an alter call. Almost everyone in the crowd went forward or said the prayer in their chairs. We then spread out and laid hands on those around us and prayed over them. It was such an overwheling time..but overwhelming in a good way…with God’s presence, I couldn’t help but cry. Once we were done we handed out Bibles to those that accepted Christ and then handed out beans and rice to the families.
Keep us in your prayers today as we are getting more and more tired and we are going to another village today to do another medical clinic. Pray that we will be as big of an impact on the community today as we have been in the past few days.
Thanks again for all of your prayers and words! It’s so exciting to see what everyone is writing!
Well, I hope you all have a great day..and in a few short days I will be seeing you again
    Much love!

P.S.– Happy Birthday Dad! I hope you are having the best birthday ever! Love you 🙂

I can’t wait to hear more stories when we’re all back at school Shae! I love reading your posts and am so happy for the things God is doing through you and all your team members!

  25. LeRoy says:

Thanks for the greeting, babe. I am having a great birthday. Your mom has been spoiling me. It has been a tough week in more ways than one. But today is great because God is in it. I have been praying for you and will continue to do so. Can’t wait to hear the stories and see you again. Love you too.

  26. Amy Abbas says:

Miss you and enjoy your time there cause it will go so fast. Sorry this is the first I had a chance to write. Love you!!

  27. Shaelee Boender says:

Well today was our last day here. It was an awesome day in that! We were able to do some sight seeing and shopping this morning in Antigua. It was really fun to see what was all in the market and of course witness the best McDonalds I have ever seen/tasted..hands down! We also were able to go back to La Rena (where we built houses) and go to church with the people there. We are the first group ever to go back and go to church with them. They made us a magnificant meal and the service was beyond anything I ever imagined. We of course ran into a lot of the kiddos we built relationships with throughout the week and of course it was very hard to say goodbye once again. I’m not going to share too much more as I will be home tomorrow and will be able to share some more stories in person..but just wanted to share how much God has worked through a lot of things this week.

I think you all so so so much for your prayers and kind words this week. It was definitely very fun to look and see that I had messages! I ask that you keep us in your prayers as we travel home tomorrow..our flight leaves around 7 so we have to leave the base around 3:30 tomorrow morning. Thanks so much and see you soon!

  28. Donna says:

Keeping you in thoughts and prayers as you make your way back to the states. I’m anxious to read all of your posts (I haven’t had the chance to get them all read yet). I’m so glad that you had such a wonderful experience! Praying your plane ride is as uneventful and what you’ve experienced and witness there.. you bring back here and share w/others and continue growing in your faith and helping others as well.
